How to choose a personalized book for a bilingual child

Decide first whether you want both languages on one page or a separate book for each. Librio does both languages on a page, as a word book. TeddyReads writes a full story in one language per book, and we found nothing that does both.

What the research says

Children read to in their home language have an easier time learning to read in a second one, according to Colorín Colorado.

Owning the books isn't enough, though. In a small 2023 study of 41 children, home-language digital books didn't make children read more. Our takeaway is to pick the book your child will ask for, and make reading it a routine.

Making one with TeddyReads

Set the site to your language first, because the book is written in that language. Then have the family member who speaks it record about a minute of their voice. For a second language, make a second book, which will be a new story rather than a translation.

Questions parents ask

Is there a personalized book with two languages on one page?

Yes. Librio's My 100 Words is a personalized picture dictionary in any two of its 29 languages. It is a word book rather than a story.

Can TeddyReads put two languages on one page?

No. Each TeddyReads book is written in one language. For a second language, you make a second book, which is a new story rather than a translation.

What if our home language isn't one of the five?

Then TeddyReads isn't the right choice for that language. Librio and Unuhi both cover far more.

Can a grandparent read the book in their own language?

Yes, if the book is in English, Spanish, French, Portuguese or German. They sign in to your account from any phone or computer and record about a minute of speech.
